The Prototype Engine Valve Train Testing

Valve train measurements have been carried out in Helsinki University of Technology in Internal Combustion Engines laboratory (ICE). The measurements have proved that the valve train works fine.

During the testing, the camshaft was rotated at constant speed by an electric motor. Acceleration curve was measured with an acceleration censor for specific speeds. See photos below to learn more about the measurement installation. Click images for larger view.

Photo 1. Photo 1. The acceleration censor is attached to the intake valve. Some material has been lathed away from the intake valve plate to compensate the additional mass of the censor.

There is an example of measured versus calculated acceleration curves for the intake valve train below. The engine speed is 2000 RPM. The simulation has been carried out with GT-Vtrain software in ICE laboratory. As seen in the picture, the simulation predicts the acceleration in moderate precision excluding the vibrations at end of the curve. It seems that the damping setting has been too low in the created simulation model.
